The Solid Rock
During the summer, my wife and I were able to go to Germany to visit our children and grandchildren. While there, our son-in-law took us to see the Nan Stein Castle, a medieval castle that is still standing today. Nan Stein Castle was built between the late 1400s and early 1500s and is currently being restored. Our son-in-law explained the castle building process to us.
The original builders first chose the highest hill or mountain overlooking the landscape so they could provide protection to the people. The people were able to look up and see the fortress standing there as a guard over their lives and community. The castle was easily defendable and a stronghold in times of trouble.
The builders then dug down deep into the mountainside until they hit solid rock. Using the solid rock as a foundation stone, they used rock upon rock, until they had built a solid foundation. The castle still stands today as a witness to those who chose to build on a solid foundation.
Peter reminds us that Jesus Christ is the "Living Stone"and is the foundation we are to build our lives upon. He was chosen by God and as we build our lives upon Him, we become "living stones"being built up into a spiritual house and a holy priesthood.
At NBC, we are building a solid foundation for a lasting ministry based on Jesus Christ, who is our Living Stone. Our staff, students, and instructors are living stones offering up spiritual sacrifices to the Lord, in service to the Church and our communities.
"Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 2:4-5 (NKJV)
