A study of youth, the theological and theoretical foundations of education ministry to youth, contemporary Christian educational needs of youth, and programs designed to meet those needs.

The following learning objectives will be achieved by this course:

1. Develop an understanding of the underlying theology of youth ministry, and how theology can inform and direct youth ministry programs.
2. Explore theories and approaches to youth ministry, including incarnational, relational, pastoral and purpose driven.
3. Examine the importance of the identity and character development of the youth leader.
4. Research and demonstrate knowledge of the basic issues of adolescent struggles and of current youth culture.
5. Explore the basics of adolescent mental, social, and faith development.
6. Apply principles and knowledge of youth culture to an observed real life hands on experience through participation, observation, interview or case study.
7. Develop a philosophy of youth ministry, integrating strategic planning, programming, and purpose.
8. Examine the importance of community identity, group atmosphere, and a prayer base.
9. Understand how to approach problems and issues that surface in youth ministry, and how to create a safe, friendly, spiritual atmosphere.

The following competencies as outlined in the (SOURCEBOOK) to meet the educational requirements for Ordination within the Church of the Nazarene will be achieved by completing this course:

• Ability to envision, order, and participate in contextualized, theologically grounded worship and to develop and lead appropriate services for special occasions (i.e. wedding, funeral, baptism, and Lord's Supper). (CP11)
• Ability to prepare and lead discipleship ministries that are biblically sound, age-appropriate, intergenerational, and culturally sensitive. (CP15)
