An introductory course that explores the development of the Christian Church from Pentecost to the present day.

• Ability to describe the impact of the historical background of the New Testament on the message of Jesus and Paul.

• Ability to describe the general story line of Church History and the development of the major doctrines and creeds.

• Ability to identify and describe the significance of the major figures, themes, and events of the: Patristic, Medieval, Reformation, Puritan, Pietist, Wesleyan, and Modern periods of Church History.

• Ability to describe how the church implemented its mission in the various periods of Church History.

• Ability to describe and interpret the relationship between culture and individual behavior.

• Ability to understand, appreciate, and work sensitively to explain the nature of cultures and sub-cultures.

The following are competencies for Ministry as outlined in the Sourcebook for Ministerial Development that will be addressed in this course:

• Ability to tell the story of Christian history and the development of creeds and major doctrines. (CN10)
• Ability to describe the mission and practice of the Church throughout its history. (CN11)
• Ability to understand, appreciate, and work sensitively with cultures and sub-cultures. (CX1)
