Stephen Murphy, NBC Alumni
Stephen R. Murphy has been the worship pastor at Spring Church of the Nazarene for twenty-four years. In 2015, he felt the call to pastor and has since completed the prescribed elder course of study in July of 2019 through Nazarene Bible College.
He has been performing, writing and arranging music for over thirty-five years, and now, also, has a passion for preaching God’s Word as well as ministering to the grieving. He has been a Master adjunct professor at Jackson College (where he taught applied piano and voice for thirty years) and has also taught Jazz piano at Spring Arbor University. Currently, he is a piano and voice instructor at a private music academy.
Stephen is married to Marcia Murphy, who is the director of Jackson County Guardian Services in Jackson. They have a son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Kerrin Smith and two of the brightest and most adorable grand-kids—Bryson and Garrett. He completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music with a double concentration in vocal performance and musical composition. However, piano is still considered his primary instrument. He also has Master of Church Ministry and Doctor of Church Ministry Degrees from Andersonville Theological Seminary.
In 2019, he became an Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist through the Grief Recovery Institute. Additionally, he is a published composer-most notably with J.W. Harris Co. and Tuncore Publishing. He's won several awards for his compositions and was a finalist in the Spring Arbor University’s New Songwriters Competition in September of 2018.
They have recently been welcomed to Okemos Church of the Nazarene on the Michigan District.
