Diversity

Blessed to Celebrate and Learn

Every human being is made in the image of God, and as the Church, we should be diverse in culture but one in Christ. At NBC, we are blessed with opportunities to celebrate and learn from diversity.

It can take many forms – race, ethnicity, gender, age, education, skills, upbringing, thinking style, physical abilities, and management status. Biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin has said, “Good leadership requires you to surround yourself with people of diverse perspectives who can disagree with you without fear of retaliation.” By fostering an environment where diversity of thought and experience is brought together by singleness of mission, we are better able to prepare adults to evangelize, disciple, and minister to the world.

Diversity is generally believed to bring at least three distinct positives to the workplace: creativity, better customer service, and professional development. (Read more on the topic here: https://www.devry.edu/blog/diversity-in-the-workplace.html)

Diversity in Ministry – Today

Diversity in the Church is a beautiful reminder of God’s creative power.

What does diversity in ministry really mean? It means people using their skills and talents to show Christ-centered love, regardless of location or circumstance. It sometimes looks like this: https://www.nazarene.org/article/european-nazarenes-respond-crisis-ukraine.

What About Me?

Every day we make decisions and choose words that will impact others. What assumptions have you already made that you should be questioning?

  • Is my belief based on limited or incomplete knowledge?
  • Is there another way to view this situation?
  • What will be the impact of this belief? How is it impacting what I say and how I react?
  • How can I work to broaden my perspective?
  • What norms do I take for granted?
  • What holidays or heroes do I celebrate? Are there any I should reconsider?
