There is Power in the Word of God

It’s interesting to note how Jesus, the greatest person who ever lived, handled Satan, the greatest foe who ever lived.

It’s recorded in Matthew 4:1-11 that Jesus simply quoted the Scriptures when confronted by Satan. Three times He said, “It is written.” Where was it written? In Deuteronomy, that’s where.

Jesus was simply quoting Deuteronomy, but why? He who could speak worlds into existence, silence storms, and raise the dead; He who had power over demons and could call ten thousand angels, maybe ten million angels – what was it He did when facing the foe of all foes? He simply quoted the Word of God as written by Moses over fourteen hundred years before. Jesus knew there was power in the quoted Word of God.

What about you? What have you been using to fight the foe these days? New Year’s resolutions? Intestinal fortitude? Maybe at your house it’s positive thinking, or perhaps simply the determination not to give up. They all sound good to contemporary society, but they were not the Master’s method for spiritual survival. No, He used what Paul calls the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. I doubt we can improve on Jesus’ method. As a matter of fact, I don’t want to try improving on it. I just want to get in on it. How about you?

Remember: Jesus was the great model for us all! And He resisted the evil one with the Scriptures. Go back in your memory. Resurrect some of those passages you used to know. Write them down. Quote them to your family. Keep them near you. Commit them to memory.

I don’t know about you, but I feel better already knowing that I’m using the Master’s method for spiritual survival. He’s promised to bring you through; you’ve got His Word on it.
