To Make So Many Disciples
Five years ago, the Hispanic ministry of the Nazarene Church in Grove City began humbly as a home cell group. The group grew quickly, reaching over 50 members before the pandemic. That growth marked just the beginning of a vibrant missionary effort focused on evangelism, compassion, and discipleship in our city.
With the arrival of COVID-19, we faced the challenge of staying connected as a community. We used social media strategically to continue sharing the message of hope. Although it was a period of uncertainty, God showed that His work continues. When the government allowed churches to reopen with social distancing guidelines, the lead pastor, Dale Benson, encouraged the Hispanic ministry to begin in-person services. Even though we weren’t fully prepared, we trusted God’s call and began live services in May 2020 with 15 people. Today, the ministry welcomes over 100 attendees regularly.
We are currently working on several outreach ministries: The English as a Second Language (ESL) program has been one of the most impactful ministries from this time. In its first year, we had over 150 participants from 25 different nationalities. It has grown into not only an educational space but also a place for prayer, daily devotions, and invitations to church events.
We also launched a community sports program offering basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Regardless of religious background, this program is open to all children in the community. These events have allowed us to share the love of Christ with many families and build bridges to the gospel.
Another vital ministry has been Jordan Crossing, which supports individuals who are homeless or struggling with addiction. It has become a channel for providing both physical and spiritual nourishment. We’ve seen families find hope in Christ through something as simple as a meal.
We’ve also seen profound transformations – individuals from strong Catholic backgrounds have surrendered their lives to Jesus through learning English in our classes. We’ve had the privilege of baptizing entire families and joining them in dedicating their children to the Lord.
God has also moved within our own congregation. Many who couldn’t travel abroad for missions are now serving locally by teaching English or helping with sports outreach. Evangelism has become a daily and accessible reality.
Today, the Spanish ministry reflects Jesus’ mission: to make disciples of all nations. We remain committed to reaching the lost in our city, with members from 15 different nationalities. This ministry stands as proof that God is at work even through challenges. He is lifting His hands, touching hearts, and fulfilling His promise to be with us in the Great Commission. We continue to pray, serve, and believe that “the harvest is plentiful” and the “Lord of the harvest will send more workers.”
