MPP1141 - Preaching the Story of God

Course Description

An introduction to homiletical principles and the practice of sermon preparation.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Prepare and preach sermons that are Biblically Based.
  2. Prepare and preach sermons that are Spirit Driven.
  3. Prepare and preach sermons that are Outcome Focused.
  4. Prepare and preach Well Crafted Sermons.
  5. Prepare and preach sermons that are Communicated Effectively.

The following are Competencies for Ministry as outlined in the Sourcebook on Ordination USA that will be addressed in this course:

 

  1. CN6 Ability to exegete a passage of Scripture using contextual, literary, and theological analysis.
  2. CP12 Ability to prepare, and deliver biblically sound sermons using appropriate techniques and skills demonstrating cultural sensitivity.
  3. CP13 Ability to develop sermons in various forms (evangelistic, pastoral care, doctrinal teaching, lectionary, etc.).
  4. CP14 Ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of current homiletical models in light of enduring theological and contextual perspectives.

Course Prerequisites

For maximum benefit, this course should not be taken until after the student has completed the following MPP Courses. This course was written and will be taught with the assumption of a working knowledge based upon the following courses:

  1. MPP1001 Telling the Old Testament Story of God
  2. MPP1011 Telling the New Testament Story of God
  3. MPP1041 Interpreting Scripture
  4. MPP1061 Practicing Wesleyan-Holiness Spiritual Formation
