MTH1003 - General Mathematics
Course Description
- A course designed to provide mathematical concepts and skills to assist students in using mathematics in their ministry, personal, and professional lives. The students will be given exposure to problem solving, set theory, historical systems of numeration, algebraic equations, geometry, consumer mathematics, and statistics.
Course Objectives
The following intended learning outcomes will be achieved by this course:
- Develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Develop an understanding of the history and development of the base-ten numeration system.
- Solve real number system applications using rules and properties of operations.
- Evaluate and solve algebraic expressions and equations.
- Estimate and solve financial applications involving decimal numbers, fractions, ratios, rates, proportions, interest, and percents.
- Use geometric concepts and formulas for solving real-life applications.
- Calculate and critically interpret statistical data.
The following are competencies for Ministry as outlined in the Sourcebook for Ministerial Development that will be addressed in this course:
- Ability to reason logically for discernment, assessment, and problem solving. (CP5)
Course Prerequisites
satisfactory score on the NBC math competency exam.
