PSY4624 - Individual Counseling Theories

Course Description

A course intended to teach, from a Christian perspective, a comparative overview of the philosophies, goals, and techniques of major counseling theories as applied to individuals.

Course Objectives

The following learning objectives will be achieved by this course:

  1. Accurately describe obstacles and issues beginning therapists face in individual counseling situation, including the tension between the therapist and the client, and be able to identify techniques for resolving these obstacles and issues.
  2. Effectively utilize key concepts, principles, and techniques of major contemporary counseling models in a helping setting, relating techniques to practice.
  3. Analyze the application of different models of individual counseling to a case study.
  4. Explain the importance of an integrative approach to individual counseling practice.
  5. Exhibit confidence in his or her ability to apply the theories and techniques of individual counseling in an appropriate manner.
  6. Integrate individual counseling theories and techniques with a biblical faith.
