A study of the techniques of oral interpretation to develop expressive reading skills that enhance understanding, stimulate imagination, and quicken the emotional response of the reader and listener to various types of literature. Specific application is made to effective public reading of Scripture. Classroom practice and performance is emphasized. Prerequisites: Principles of Public Speaking, Introduction to the Old Testament or Introduction to the New Testament, and Biblical Interpretation.

FOCUS and PROCEDURE - Specifically, the course is designed to improve the oral public reading of scripture.  You will learn how to bring to life the printed words that preserve ideas and experiences.  The goal is to embrace the meaning and emotion of the written selections.

Analysis of numerous literary forms found in the Bible will reveal varied demands for vocal interpretation.  Classroom practice will assume a "laboratory" approach.  Passages assigned will be rehearsed primarily outside of class followed by reading and evaluation in class.  Success in reading will be defined in spiritual as well as technical terms.  Of particular significance will be the impact of the readings on the listener.

As a result of this course you should. . .

• Recognize and define the following literary forms found in the Bible:
  Narrative, Didactic, Oratoric, Symbolic, Lyric, Dramatic, and Epic.
• Know the following about these types of literature:
  • their essential characteristics and qualities
  • their purpose
  • where they can be found
  • what expressive actions of the voice are required for their best expression
  • what value they have for you as a minister or Christian worker
• Understand basic skills in arranging scriptures, particularly compiling and abridging, to achieve maximum oral reading advantage.
• Acquire a greater understanding of the significance, priority, and demands of public scripture reading.
• Develop a deeper commitment to your responsibility as an oral messenger of the Word.
• Read with increased ease and proficiency as a result of regular (daily) practice.
• Develop a responsive voice to interpret intelligently but not extravagantly, with sympathy but without artificiality, various thoughts and feelings contained in passages.
• Have the processes of your thinking stimulated and accentuated, deeper feeling awakened, and realization of the truth heightened.

The following are competencies for Ministry as outlined in the Sourcebook for Ministerial Development that will be addressed in this course:

• Ability to communicate publicly through multiple methods (oral, written, media, etc.) with clarity, and creativity, utilizing gender inclusive language. (CP1)
