Bible Holiness
NBC President, Scott Sherwood shared his love for the book he read over his vacation, Dr. T. A. Noble’s Christian Theology, Volume 1 (Faith and History), part 1. Wanting to share the impactful account of J. B. Chapman’s testimony, he read from Christian Theology to the NBC faculty and staff on an NBC Chapel zoom.
J. B. Chapman was one of the founders of Nazarene Theological Seminary and was one of our General Superintendents.
It spoke of Bible Holiness and the need to be holy to get to heaven. It shared how as a teenager J. B. attended a camp meeting. They extended the meetings one whole week, and it was in that second week that J. B. was saved and sanctified. J. B. hoped people would find Jesus early in their life. Holiness is purity, not maturity. J. B.’s experience of holiness is an example to us to seek and find this blessing of holiness. It was called Bible Holiness in those days. “We don’t hear that term much these days,” commented Dr. Sherwood.
Dr. Sherwood said he and NBC were part of this chain of the Holiness movement. Jude wrote: “Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people (Jude 1:3).” We are to stay in the path of the Wesleyan/Holiness movement.
