Reaching the Goal

Dr. Gary Haines, NBC Chaplain, writes emails, texts, and makes telephone calls daily to NBC students. Here is his latest encouraging letter that serves to make connection with and spiritually inspire those who are studying.

Summer has passed so quickly in a flurry of summer camp, lawn mowing, assemblies, kid’s activities, church picnics and mission projects.  Many students have added the workload of summer classes onto their ‘TO DO’ lists.  And that’s in addition to the other things that are ongoing year-round… jobs, church responsibilities, families, and financial management. Whew – I’m worn out just typing about all of it. Time flies by so rapidly, and yet there is a dichotomy, and that is, time seems to drag when you are working toward a goal. And the longer it takes to reach that goal -- the easier it is to get discouraged.  Do you ever experience that?

Our Lord knows that our President, Dr. Scott Sherwood, and all of us who serve here at Nazarene Bible College are always searching and praying for God to speak to us through scripture, so we can, hopefully, be a constant source of encouragement to you as you prepare for and honor His Call upon your life here at NBC. Now, with this said, let us all do our best to embrace the scripture below:

“Therefore, be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:7-11).

A number of elements of this scripture speak to us:

  • Pray
  • Love deeply
  • Don’t grumble
  • Serve
  • Be a steward of God’s grace
  • Speak God’s words
  • God provides strength
  • Praise Jesus
  • Glorify God

Personally, this list seems pivotal to a daily Christian walk – but under stress, juggling many different demands on your time – it becomes ESSENTIAL. We challenge you to come alongside us DAILY to work the list above.
