The Grace of a Step-by-Step Calling
“If God showed us what our lives were going to be like,” says recent NBC graduate Michelle Jennett, “it would be overwhelming!” That must be why He has given her a calling and the grace to follow Him one day at a time.
Michelle Jennett accepted Christ when she was just 8 years old but spent the rest of her growing up years learning to give each of the many keys of her heart to God. She fought hard over that final key – not out of stubbornness, but because she understood just how vulnerable it would make her. Yet God was not demanding. He led her step-by-step to be given completely to His will.
Now, Michelle serves as Associate Pastor and in the Wednesday night children’s ministry at Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene as well as preaching two or three times each month at a church 90 miles away, besides her part-time job in her community. When NBC Provost Dr. Alan Lyke travelled to Michigan to help celebrate her graduation from NBC, the church hosted family members and coworkers who normally do not attend church. This celebration was another opportunity to share the Gospel!
Can you imagine if that 8-year-old new Christian had been confronted with all those ministry responsibilities? Instead, He gave her a doors-opening journey toward her calling. Along the way, Michelle has served as a Sunday school teacher, nursery worker, and any other position needed.
Eventually, Michelle came to NBC when God opened the door specifically for her, not just to her husband who was also interested in the ministry. This summer, Michelle graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Ministry with a major in Bible and Theology, on her way to ordination in the Church of the Nazarene.
“God is so faithful,” she declares. “He doesn’t give us that whole load. He helps us through it.” Praise God for the grace of a step-by-step calling!
