NBC Commencement Celebration Follow-Up Story

I am Jason Bassett, currently the Worship Pastor at Casper First Church of the Nazarene in Casper, Wyoming. I shared during my Torch Testimony at the NBC Graduation Celebration what I like to call my 'Holy 2x4 moment." I had been running from my calling, like so many of us do, and I had an experience that opened my eyes.

I had been active in our local community theater. I had great success. That success started tainting my view of my ministry. My pastor called me up on Good Friday, 2016, and told me that we were going to have an impromptu Good Friday service. I had a rehearsal for a dinner theater planned that night, so I told him I couldn't make it.

I pushed the red disconnect button and felt like someone had swung a 2x4 at my head. It was the Holy Spirit saying, "Are you going to continue to follow your own success, stroking your ego, or are you going to follow the calling I have placed upon your life?" Needless to say, I did not go to the theater rehearsal; we did have the Good Friday service, and I was reading in Romans that day and just happened to open it up to Chapter 12. Verses 1 and 2 spoke to me and have become my "life verses."

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God - this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:1-2 NIV

We are currently without a senior pastor, so I am assisting in the filling of that role, preaching, and such. We are currently seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit in our future, whether that will be staying in Casper or moving on to other adventures!
